Come to the Cabaret

The Holly Theater in Dahlonega takes on a heady subject in song and dance in the first musical performance of the new year – Cabaret -- debuting on February 5 and running weekends through February 21.

The scene is set in the Roaring 20s, following the devastation of World War I, and before the emergence of what was to be known as Hitler’s Third Reich. The place is the Kit Kat Klub in Berlin, Germany – where the play’s Master of Ceremonies assures revelers that whatever their troubles, they will forget them at the Cabaret. He may have stretched the truth a bit – what goes on there, in this performance will be unforgettable. Those who have seen the play on its opening weekend say that this is quite a departure from the usual Holly Theater fare in that there are some scenes that will leave the audience mute. Powerful stuff.

Among those regulars at the Cabaret are English cabaret dancer Sally Bowles, and an American writer, Clifford Bradshaw, who meet in the underground speak-easy amidst questions of morality and totalitarian ideologies.
Cabaret was a 1966 Broadway hit and Tony Award-winning musical and songs like “Maybe This Time,” “Don’t Tell Mama,” and “Willkommen” will be familiar.

“Cabaret” will be performed Feb. 5-7, 12-14 and 19-21. Showtimes are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays at 69 W. Main St. in downtown Dahlonega.

Free parking is available at the University of North Georgia Dahlonega parking deck behind the theater.
