Dahlonega was ready for our close-up this morning as festival scene filming for the Sony/ABC television pilot “Hail Mary” began on the north side of the Historic Public Square. Weather was perfect and about 188 extras – many of them local – were rubbing shoulders with TV stars meandering through the “Bi-annual Corduroy Festival”. The magic of Hollywood, with dozens of production trucks, miles of cable and the sound of “action” and “cut”, was coursing through downtown Dahlonega.
Dahlonega has been getting a lot of attention lately as production companies from Hollywood, as well as regional video producers and directors, have discovered not only the disarming charm of our city, but the welcoming, amenable nature of Dahlonega area residents and merchants. One movie company turned springtime Dahlonega into a wintry Smoky Mountain landscape, and the latest transformed the Historic Public Square into a quaint Vermont village. Christmas in the Smokies, a made-for-TV movie, debuted last December; and “Hail Mary” is a TV pilot being produced for Sony Television. You never know when you too might be asked if you’re ready for your close-up.
