Experience Nature at its Best in Dahlonega and the North Georgia Mountains
Dahlonega’s Inns and Lodges offer an Array of Outdoor, Spa and Wellness Packages

DAHLONEGA, GA.  – June, 2007 –   Among the almost infinite number of activities available are hiking, camping, mountain biking, canoeing and kayaking, wildlife viewing, trout fishing, and naturally, exploring the many magnificent waterfalls cascading among the serenely stunning scenery.  Although you can visit Dahlonega for the day, why not stay awhile?  Innkeepers in Dahlonega have created outdoor and wellness packages to enhance the quality of your stay.  For a sneak peak at all there is to do in this vast mountain landscape, visit www.dahlonega.org, call toll-free 1.800.231.5543, or visit the Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau at 13 South Park Street on the historic square.

Rafting and Cycling

The natural beauty of the area may be best experienced on a quiet rafting trip down the river or by exploring the venerable forests by mountain bike.  Local outfitters such as Appalachian Outfitters (www.canoegeorgia.com) offer canoeing and kayaking trips down the Chestatee and Etowah Rivers for individuals, families and groups.  As you float along the river, you may see native crittters including wood duck, great blue heron, beaver, deer, otter, osprey, and turtles galore.  For those who like to pedal instead of paddle, Dahlonega, now known as a world-class cycling venue, has hosted some of the greatest names in this growing sport.  Bicycle rentals and services are available through Dahlonega Wheelworks (www.wheelworksga.com), Lifetime Bikes (www.lifetimebikes.com), and Northstar Bicycle.

Chattahoochee National Forest

Some may be surprised to learn that the Chattahoochee National Forest in Georgia marks the beginning of the famed Appalachian Trail.  No other trail bespeaks of wilderness and nature more than the renowned 2,135-mile, Georgia-to-Maine Appalachian Trail, of which 30 miles twist and turn along the northern border of Lumpkin County.  All told, nearly 1,400 miles of trout streams and more than 400 miles of trails crisscross the entire Forest, scores of which meander through Dahlonega and Lumpkin County.

Golf

If golf is your game, the Nicklaus Golf Club at Birch River, designed by golfing legend Jack Nicklaus, provides not only uniquely challenging golf on a 6,955 yard, par-72 course, but also offers incredible views along the Chestatee River.  Part of the course even zigzags across the water seven times and the fourth green, fifth hole, sixth tee are played entirely on a river island.  (www.nicklausgolfbirchriver.com)
